Do Hire or Not To Hire a Professional Makeup Artist

WHY HIRE A PROFESSIONAL? WOULDN’T IT JUST BE EASIER TO DO MY OWN MAKEUP?

These are the questions that most brides will ask themselves at least once in the wedding planning process and I completely understand why…….There are a lot of things to consider! To help with this difficult decision, let’s go over the pros and cons.

PROS: Do Hire or Not To Hire a Professional Makeup Artist1) YOUR MAKEUP WILL BE ON POINT

This is literally the #1 reason why people hire makeup artists for their wedding. What bride wouldn’t want to look their very best on their wedding day?

2) TRAINING/SKILL SET

Being that they are a professionals at their craft, your artist will have a well-rounded knowledge of what looks the best, how makeup photographs, and what products work the best for your skin. You may also want to consider hiring a makeup artist because you may not fully know your way around makeup. It’s nearly impossible to be great at everything so if you need a little help on the day of your wedding…. go for it!

3) IT WILL BE LESS STRESSFUL

By hiring a professional, you are eliminating that one extra thing that you need to do that day. You won’t have to worry about doing it yourself and stressing about how it will turn out in the end. Makeup artists usually offer bridal trials so you will know exactly what the makeup will look like on your wedding day!

4) TIME MANAGEMENT

They will have the experience to get you and your bridal party done promptly. This is a super important thing since timing is everything! Most artists have done quite a handful of weddings by now and know exactly how long it takes them for each person. There will be no running behind because of a bridesmaid who is just doing the finishing touches on her makeup.

5) THEY HAVE AN ARSENAL OF PRODUCTS

Basically, makeup artists have a whole Sephora store and will have a TON of products for you to choose from! From skincare to makeup, they’ve got you covered! Makeup artists will normally carry more high-end/luxury items and a more wide variety than you may have at your disposal. After all, makeup is a luxury…why not go all out?!

Now onto the cons of hiring a makeup artist (although some of these can be turned into a pro):

CONS: Do Hire or Not To Hire a Professional Makeup Artist1) IT’S MORE EXPENSIVE

This is the #1 reason why people don’t choose to hire a makeup artist for their wedding. You may think, “why should I spend so much money for my makeup for just one day?” However, this can be flipped with a little math (yes, I said it….MATH!) Let’s say that you are doing your makeup yourself and you go to a store to buy your own makeup. I’ll be using comparable dollar amounts here based on drugstore/mid-range prices……. Here is the cost break down: Primer ($15), foundation ($20), eye shadow palette ($30), Mascara ($10), and setting spray ($15). This makes the grand total $90. This is also not including blush, bronzer, highlighter, and false lashes if you opt for them. Makeup artists, at least me, charge around $125-150 for bridal makeup. This means that the amount you are spending to find the perfect products for yourself may not be a less costly alternative.

2) YOU MAY NOT LOOK LIKE YOURSELF

Normally, this applies to those who do not wear makeup on a daily basis or those that are a little pickier with their makeup. We get so used to seeing ourselves a certain way and once we put makeup on, it definitely does change the way we look! Most brides just want to be an enhanced version of themselves and recognizable to their husbands. If you don’t feel like another person will be better at applying your makeup than you, then don’t do it!

3) MAKEUP & PHOTOGRAPHY KNOWLEDGE

This is a biggie! Another reason why you would hire a makeup artist is because they know

what makeup looks good in photos and what does not. You may have heard the term “flashback” being thrown around when the topic of makeup comes up. Have you ever seen a person in a photo where their face is about 5 shades lighter than their body? Yep…..that’s flashback! That white-like cast is usually due to an ingredient in foundations, concealers, or powders. So this brings me to my main point…if you are going to do makeup yourself, PLEASE do your research on the products you chose or even do a flash test yourself with the flash on your phone camera. You don’t want to pay all that money for a photographer just not

have your makeup look the way you want it to!

4) IT WILL BE ONE MORE VENDOR YOU HAVE TO HIRE

This honestly is one of the smaller “cons” on the list, but hiring a makeup artist does take time and it’s just one more vendor you’re going to have to hire. You will have to take time to search for the makeup artist that is ideal for you, do a bridal trial (maybe multiple if you do not like the results), and then coordinate that vendor among the others on the wedding day. I like to make a tentative schedule with time slots for my brides and send it to them the week before to avoid this. I know how stressful planning weddings is and that’s just one less thing the bride has to do that day! To conclude this debate, there are several pros and cons of hiring a makeup artist, but when it comes down to it….your opinion is the only one that matters! Hopefully, this helped you in the decision-making process or at least gave you different things to consider. You are the bride and I urge everyone to just go with their gut. After all, it is your day and you have the final say!

STAY BEAUTIFUL!!
